Irina Bradley

Irina Bradley is a British iconographer, who follows the traditional way of icon painting, which is regarded as a contemplative practice.  In her work Irina uses natural earth and mineral pigments, including malachite, lapis and cinnabar. Irina studied icon painting at the Prosopon School of Iconology in Moscow under Elena Antonova, who encouraged her to become a teacher in icon painting. She continued her studies at the Prince's School of Traditional Arts in London, where amongst other disciplines she studied Indian and Persian miniature painting, mosaics, stained glass, islimi and geometry. Irina is a visiting tutor for icon painting at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London, where she completed her doctoral research and was awarded her PhD  in 2015. She also teaches icon painting at her Buckinghamshire studio. Irina’s icons are in churches, private chapels and  collections in Australia, Norway, Russia, the UAE, United Kingdom and the United States.

Irina has exhibited at several international exhibitions and has presented at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Temenos Academy and Oxford University.

In June and July 2016 Irina Bradley is introducing a new flexible course. A participant may choose any of the following dates:

Please note that the places are allocated on first come first served basis. Each day is limited to 8 participants. Some slots are booked already, please book early to avoid disappointment. There is a cancellation policy, however if you give enough notice your date can be rearranged at no extra charge. It is possible to choose the subject you like, however please check with Irina beforehand. Please also note that it takes five days to finish one small icon. More days in July will be offered shortly. Irina Bradley will be conducting a 5 day non-residential icon painting course from the 24h to 28th October 2016 at her High Wycombe studio. The course is suitable for all levels.  

Course Outline: To introduce students to gilding and fluid egg tempera techniques with the aim to finish a small icon depicting St Barbara in Russo-Byzantine style to take home. Returning students may bring other icons to work on.

The attendees will be introduced to gilding and painting with natural mineral and earth pigments mixed in egg tempera with the aim to complete a small icon of Saint Barbara by the end of the course. The course will include demonstrations of icon oiling technique and shell gold making. The cost is £350 pounds, inclusive of icon boards and all materials. Tea and coffee will be provided.
